NHS Borders’ first ever staff awards event, ‘Celebrating Excellence’, was held on April 4th 2014 at SpringwoodPark. The evening was a celebration of dedication, clinical excellence and person-centred care.
There were a number of nominations submitted by staff members and the general public. A panel of judges chose three finalists for each of the ten categories. The Celebrating Excellence awards were based on NHS Borders Corporate Objectives and the values that underpin them. Funding for the event was provided by the difference.
Reflecting on the success of the evening, Chairman of NHS Borders, John Raine said “Friday night was a very special night for NHS Borders, our staff, partners, volunteers and invited guests. All of the finalists and winners were so very proud and indeed humbled to have been nominated and recognised for what they consider to be simply doing their job.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who nominated and contributed to making the evening such a success. Celebrating Excellence is now firmly embedded in NHS Borders annual calendar of events, and I am already looking forward to next year.”

The ‘Chairman’s Award’ seeks to recognise a team or individual who have given an outstanding contribution to the organisation, who uphold our values and who demonstrate true excellence
The winning team, Michael’s Team, were nominated in recognition of the skill and care they showed in restoring a patient’s vision. A procedure which carried many risks due to the complex health issues that the patient, Michael, has.
The Student of the Year Award recognises an individual who in the course of their studies and work placement has shown impressive dedication and commitment to furthering themselves and supporting the work of NHS Borders.
The winner, Kirsty Baxter from Hawick is a very deserving student who has shown excellence in the Planning and Performance team since beginning a ten week work placement from BordersCollege. From day one she has proven herself to be enthusiastic and willing to take on any task given to her. Her I.T. skills have been particularly sought after by the department and she has helped the web team in designing and creating NHS Borders’ new website which will be launched in May this year.
The Person Centred Care Award recognises an individual or team who deliver high quality care while being responsive to individual needs and preferences. They are open and honest with service users and treat everyone with care, compassion, dignity and respect.
The winning Special Care Baby Unit Nursing Team actively encourage families to have hands on involvement with their baby, even when physical contact may not be possible to ensure that bonds are formed between mum and baby. The patience and understanding of the team provides vital support to both parents and babies in the Borders.
The Working in Partnership Award recognises an individual or team who has exemplified partnership working to deliver service developments or improvements.
The winner, Jenny Baird from the IM&T team has demonstrated a strong commitment to partnership working in her day to day work for NHS Borders delivering on various innovative and improvement changes to the service, always taking her colleagues with her. Having a strong customer focus and a proactive positive attitude that is pragmatic and industrious to ensure service requirements are met.
The Improving Health Award recognises an individual or team who have made a real contribution to improving the health of colleagues or members of the wider public, or to helping people take control of their own health.
The winners Alison Quinn and Kerrie Blake are trained maternity assistants and are essential and enthusiastic members of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology team. They have shown excellence in care by providing targeted one to one and group support for women including teenage parents, women with a learning disability or difficulty, substance abuse issues, those in difficult social circumstances and families where there are child protection issues.
The Volunteer of the Year award recognises an individual or team who provide an outstanding service and have shown exceptional commitment to supporting the work of NHS Borders.
The winning BGH Participation Group is made up of 12 volunteers who have shown an exceptional commitment to work with the BGH staff to improve patient care. Special thanks was given to Ann Purvis who Chairs the group for her tenacity, straight talking and her desire to make the BGH one of the best hospitals in Scotland.
The Innovation and Improvement Award recognises an individual or team who has implemented changes through inspired, creative or original thinking, which have improved the experience of patients, families and carers, or colleagues.
The winner, Gill Lunn works primarily as a midwife but has also been seconded to be the Scottish Patient Safety champion for NHS Borders. She has led by example, using the Model for Improvement, and tested and embedded changes in a number of areas with her colleagues in maternity services. Her work is showcased nationally in particular for the smoking cessation work across primary and secondary care. Her continued enthusiasm, optimism, dedication and willingness to go the extra mile making her a deserving candidate for this award.
The Clinical Excellence Award recognises an individual or team who may be out of the limelight but who provide invaluable support to frontline services or colleagues in other teams.
The winning Melburn Lodge Team worked in partnership with NHS Borders Falls Prevention Team to introduce new technology and practice in preventing, reducing risk and management of falls. This resulted in a reduction of 50% of falls in first 6 months and an overall reduction of 75% in the year.
The Leading by Example Award recognises an individual who has demonstrated excellent leadership skills to inspire and motivate their colleagues.
The winner, Rachael Marples in her role as Baby Friendly Initiative Lead has led NHS Borders to achieve UNICEF “Baby Friendly” status quicker than any other health board in Scotland. Through her enthusiasm and drive she has proven herself to be an inspirational team leader while always remaining friendly, approachable and highly supportive of her colleagues.
The Behind the Scenes Award recognises an individual or team who may be out of the limelight but who provide invaluable support to frontline services or colleagues in other teams.
The winner Cameron Miles along with his colleagues in the Bedbusters Teamtransfer patients throughout the hospital. They walk miles every day, ensuring slick patient movement and an efficient patient flow. Cameron has driven and implemented improvements in Bedbusters and is cheery, friendly and consistently goes the extra mile to support staff on the BGH wards.
