Tweetchat hints, for those new to Twitter

Twitter chats are a way of engaging a wide and various audience on a specific topic/subject. The chat on 12th February, 19.00hrs, will focus on Revalidation and the 2015 Code.

Tweetchats use a # tag as a way of identifying the conversation through a chat; by following the #tag you do not need to know ahead of the discussion who is involved as they will appear in your search stream.

There are a number of apps that can be used to follow chats, or via the web version of Twitter. While some apps are more useful in following chat (e.g. Tweetdeck or Hootsuite), using the Twitter app itself is as good an option as any for new users.

In your search box, in the Twitter app, type #revalidationScot and press return. This will ensure the #tag is always at the top of your search box if you click anywhere else in the app (e.g. while responding to a notification). It's a quick way of returning to the conversation.

As Twitter has changed how it prioritises tweets, after you've created your search stream, click on the header "All Tweets" - that will provide tweets in a continuous stream, rather than the "top tweet".

Clicking into any individual tweet will allow you to RT (re-tweet) the tweet or reply.

Twitter doesn't automatically add the #tag. You will need to do that manually or your comments won't appear in the conversation timeline. At the beginning of the chat why not copy #revalidationScot to your clipboard, thereafter it's an easy task to simply paste it into a tweet.

The chat will start at 19.00hrs with a general welcome and a request to say who is online. At this point people often acknowledge they are online, but only intending to "lurk", i.e. watch proceedings without actively participating - a well-used practice across tweetchats.

Throughout the hour of the chat, various questions will be asked of participants. It is perfectly acceptable for you to post your own question throughout the conversation - please remember to include the #tag.

At the end of the chat a summary will be posted via Storify - a link will be posted on Twitter.
