Have you heard about Sick Day Rules?

When you are unwell with dehydrating illnesses such as vomiting or diarrhoea, taking certain medicines can in some cases actually cause harm. With this in mind an information card has been developed to create awareness so that preventable illness and injury can be avoided.

These cards can be found in community pharmacies around the Scottish Borders.

Dr Lynn McCallum, Consultant in Acute Medicine at NHS Borders said: “We see a lot of patients who have become acutely unwell with diarrhoea and vomiting illness who subsequently become very dehydrated. This puts significant pressure on the kidneys and in extreme cases can lead to the kidneys working less well. It is important in this situation to stop any medicines that may affect the kidneys and hence the vital importance of sick day rules. Raising awareness of the medications to stop in the event of a diarrhoea or vomiting bug will lead to far better outcomes in kidney function.”
