Statement from Mr Andrew Murray, Medical Director, NHS Borders

"The Borders General Hospital is experiencing exceptional pressure on bed availability and this means that we must put all our effort into safe discharge of patients, where we can, to create some more space.

"Please help us take the pressure off the hospital this weekend and only go to A&E if you are an emergency.

"Your community pharmacists are available to provide expert advice and treatment for a range of common illnesses and ailments, and to give advice about your medicines.

"If you or someone you care for is unwell and can't wait until your GP surgery re-opens on Monday, contact the NHS 24 helpline on 111.

"If the condition is immediately life threatening, dial 999 for an emergency ambulance.

"Thank you."
