Support and services for staff

SB Cares is committed to promoting staff health and wellbeing and supporting staff to take good care of themselves. There are a range of services available to enable you to lead healthy working lives.

Corporate wellbeing services

SB Cares offers a number of benefits to support your health and wellbeing: 

Employee Assistance Scheme
This is a free confidential life management, personal support and counselling helpline provided by Pam Assist. Experienced advisors can offer advice on a range of issues including family matters, debt, benefits and tax credits and relationships. The service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year: 0800 882 4102.

Moving and handling advice and training (relevant to your job)
Moving and handling advice and training is available from your line manager. You can also contact: training@scotborders.gov.uk 

Training
Courses cover:first aid, stress awareness, dignity at work, mindfulness, resilience and lots more. Start the New Year by trying out a 'Mindfulness' course - see the noticeboard opposite for more details.  

Workforce Planning and Development offer a number of courses to support your health and wellbeing – look out for more information in the weekly email sent out by Training or contact: training@scotborders.gov.uk  You can also speak to your line manager.

Workplace rehabilitation
If you have experienced a change in your health or are returning to work following a sickness absence, your line manager can make a referral to Occupational Health.  This will provide advice on your fitness for work and give recommendations or reasonable adjustments that can be made to support you. 

Vaccinations (relevant to your job)
These are arranged through Wellbeing & Safety: wellbeing&safety@scotborders.gov.uk – ask your line manager for more information.

Ideas to get you more active 

Walk to Work Week is a national walking challenge organised by the charity Living Streets. The aim is to get people walking more to and from work, during work and at lunchtimes during the week and beyond. Walk to work place takes place in May each year and further information can be found at www.livingstreets.org.uk

Bike Week is an annual opportunity to promote cycling, and show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life, demonstrating the social, health and environmental benefits of cycling. Bike week takes place in June each year and further information can be found at www.cyclingscotland.org

Cycle 2 Work scheme 2017

​This will be open to SBC and SB Cares staff from 1 February to 12 March. You can choose from thousands of bikes and make savings on Tax and National Insurance. For more information, visit www.cycle2work.info, call 0345 504 6444 or read more here about the scheme benefits.

To make cycling to work at SBC HQ, a more attractive, feasible option you can also access the showers at HQ in the bunker area. 

More support for healthy living

Healthy meal deals - look out for healthy meal deals in the SBC dining room. You can find healthy choices all year round.

Stress - Stressbusters Borders provides helpful advice on how you can improve how you are feeling. But, if you are still struggling, you should contact your GP as soon as you can.  They can give you some advice and may organise some additional support for you. Steps for Stress offer a step by step self-help guide, relaxation tips and signposts to a variety of other services.

Interested in quitting smoking? -Visit Borders Quit4Good. This stop smoking service provides free support in the community via specialist advisors in various locations in the Borders including: Eyemouth, Jedburgh, Hawick, Galashiels, Kelso, Innerleithen and Selkirk. 

Quit4Good’s Facebook page includes up to date information about session times or please call the service on 01835 825 971. This number is open Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm, to take referrals from members of the public, give out information about local services and other resources. An out of hours answering facility is available.

You can also call the national helpline Smokeline on 0800 848484. This number is open 7 days a week 8am-10pm. There is also a web chat service for those who prefer to chat online on the canstopsmoking website
