21 January 2019

Today, Monday 21 January 2019, is referred to by some as ‘Blue Monday’, and others as ‘Brew Monday’. Why you ask?

Back in 2005 a tutor at Cardiff University came up with a mathematical equation that looked at factors such as weather conditions, debt levels and the amount of time since Christmas as well as failed New Year’s resolutions. This determined the third Monday in January as ‘the most depressing day of the year’.

While there is a big difference between feeling a little down and experiencing depression, this date is a good reminder for everyone to look after themselves and take some time to consider their mental health and wellbeing.

Allyson McCollam, Associate Director of Public Health, said: “Everyone - no matter how well or low they are feeling - can benefit from looking after their mental health and wellbeing. Good mental health is more than just the absence of a mental health problem – we all have mental health and to be well we need to look after our minds as well as our bodies.”

“One of the best, and easiest, ways to improve your mental health and wellbeing is to connect with people close to you. This is why the simultaneous ‘Brew Monday’ campaign encourages people to chat with friends, family or work colleagues over a cup of tea.

“There are lots of other ways to keep yourself well such as doing things you enjoy, learning something new, having some ‘me time’ or being more active. Our Six Ways to be Well in the Scottish Borders wellbeing guide has more ideas, information and local contacts which are useful.

“It’s also important to know that help and support is available should you need it. If you, or someone you know, are feeling down or that you don’t know how to cope, you could speak to family, friends, or a confidential advice service such as Borderline (0800 027 4466), Breathing Space (0800 838587) or Samaritans (116 123).”
