2 February 2023
The decision to close the Chirnside Branch Surgery was endorsed by NHS Borders Board at its public board meeting held earlier today, 2 February 2023. The surgery will close on 31 March 2023.
This follows a lengthy dialogue with the Partners of the Merse Medical Practice after concerns were raised last year about the sustainability of the Practice as a result of ongoing significant challenges with the recruitment and retention of staff.
NHS Borders Primary and Community Services team have worked closely with the patients of the Practice, alongside the GP Partners to consider the options available in order to provide the best possible service for patients. As part of this work patients were invited to give their comments and suggestions, and a short life working group was formed which included patient and community representatives.
After much consideration, it became apparent in the second half of 2022 that in order to sustain Merse as a viable Practice, there was no longer any alternative option other than to close Chirnside Branch Surgery. In November last year the situation was communicated to patients in a letter, and a public meeting was held which was attended by more than 130 people.
Commenting on the decision Chief Executive of NHS Borders, Ralph Roberts said: “The Board recognises that this is a difficult situation for the people of Chirnside. The decision to close the branch surgery is not one that has been taken lightly, and sadly reflects the vulnerability of Primary Care services in light of the national shortage of GPs. In making this decision the Board are focussed on supporting the overall viability of the Practice. This is essential if we are to sustain GP services for the Practice Population.
“I would like to thank all the patients who have been involved in this process. Although I know this is not the outcome that anyone wanted, your contributions and honesty are greatly appreciated. The Board is committed to doing all we can to protect the provision of GP services across the Borders in what continue to be the most challenging of circumstances.”
