Today is International Nurses Day.

NHS Borders is taking this opportunity to thank all our healthcare support workers, student nurses and registered staff for their fantastic contribution to our health service. We are also encouraging the next generation of NHS Borders nurses by highlighting the key routes into nursing.

Elaine Dickson, Associate Director of Nursing (Acute) at NHS Borders, said: “Our nurses and student nurses do an amazing job and provide incredible care every day. Nursing at NHS Borders is a fulfilling role with many learning and development opportunities.

“If you are looking for a career with a great team and opportunities for progression in a beautiful location, this could be the perfect place for you. There are several different types of nurses, including children’s, mental health, learning disability and adult nurses, with the opportunity to develop into many different roles within each of these disciplines once qualified. So, if you are looking for a career within a caring profession, take a look at your options in nursing and hopefully you can find a good fit.”

NHS Borders is fully committed to developing our own workforce and ensuring our patients and staff have the best experience. Currently in Scotland, there are several routes into nursing and registering with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

There is the traditional 3-4 year pre-registration degree programme or a 2 year post graduate Masters level pre-registration programme for those with a previous degree. If you chose to take up a full-time nursing route, we can support you with flexible shifts to enable you to achieve your goal.

If you work as a healthcare support worker within NHS Borders, you can apply to complete your Higher National Certificate part time with Borders College and apply to enter year 2 of the nursing programme. Alternatively, you can work part time and complete your degree over 4 years with Open University.
