International Day of the Midwife

Today is International Day of the Midwife 2023, a day where midwives across the world are celebrated.

This year, we are celebrating our midwives and encouraging the next generation of midwives by sharing the route into midwifery and highlighting what a fulfilling role it is.

Kirsteen Guthrie, Associate Director of Midwifery at NHS Borders, said: “Being a midwife is a very special job, we get to support families at very crucial times in their lives. A career as a midwife at NHS Borders is a career with a great team, opportunities to learn and great professional development. We ensure all our newly qualified midwives take part in a preceptorship program and have access a variety of learning programs. If you are interested in a caring profession, I would urge you to consider this rewarding career.”

Currently in Scotland, to become a midwife in the NHS, you must complete a pre-registration degree programme accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The following universities in Scotland offer NMC approved Midwifery programmes:

• Edinburgh Napier University
• Robert Gordon University
• University of the West of Scotland
