4 October 2023
This month, we are encouraging you to take part in the Sober October challenge.
Sober October is a challenge where people abstain from alcohol for the month of October. It can be done for health reasons or to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. It’s not too late to start Sober October! Why not start today, with a friend or family member and hold each other to account.
There are plenty of benefits to giving up alcohol for a month or more such as improved sleep, a boost in energy, a clearer mind and a healthier bank balance.
Stopping drinking for October might encourage you to abstain or cut back for longer. If you want to cut down, try to have several drink-free days each week, it may help to use an app such as Drink Free Days.
Dr Sohail Bhatti, our Director of Public Health said “Abstaining from alcohol for a month or cutting down more overall can have a positive impact on your health. Not only will it save you money and potentially go some way to alleviating money worries, but it will also have a huge impact on your energy levels, freeing up more time to do things you love.
“Going sober for the month of October will make it a bit easier to stick to low-risk drinking guidelines in November and the rest of the year.”
