This week is Self Management Week. We are taking this opportunity to highlight ‘Ways to Be Well’, a new resource from the Scottish Borders Health and Social Care Partnership. Ways to Be Well is a guide about all the things we can do to look after our mental health and wellbeing.
Self management is a way of living where people take shared responsibility for managing their own conditions and overall wellbeing. Self Management Week is for everyone. Whether you or someone you care for is living with a long term condition or not, we can all do things to help us keep well and support our wellbeing.
You can use the Ways to Be Well guide to help you to:
- Feel better
- Cope better with life
- Recover if you’ve been unwell
- Stay well
- Support people you care about
Dr Sohail Bhatti, our Director of Public Health said: “Self management and doing everything we can to keep ourselves well is so important to keep us out of hospital and living our lives to the full.
“It’s not always easy to look after our minds and bodies, but with our Ways to Be Well guide, you can access resources and research-based advice on how you can eat well, be active and sleep well, as well as connecting with other people and getting closer to nature. The guide also covers practical issues such as managing money worries and limiting things that can have a negative impact on mental health and wellbeing such as alcohol, drugs and smoking.”
The Ways to Be Well guide may be useful if you are on a waiting list to see a healthcare specialist or to get health and social care services as it is full of tips and ideas for taking some positive steps to support your wellbeing while you wait. If you’re struggling, you can also use it to help find support.
