Yesterday the first ever Youth Nicotine Prevention Toolkit in Scotland was launched.

The pioneering resource, which we co-produced with children and young people in the Borders, aims to educate, inform and challenge nicotine use amongst young people locally.

Representatives from nicotine prevention organisations such as ASH Scotland, YouthBorders, Trading Standards and I Am Me Scotland attended the launch event, delivering insightful presentations and taking part in an expert Question & Answer (Q&A) session.

Ms Jenni Minto MSP, Minister for Public Health and Women’s Health was also in attendance as well as representatives from Galashiels Academy’s Pupil Council, who directly contributed to the resource’s development.

Fiona Doig, Head of Health Improvement at NHS Borders said: “This innovative toolkit represents a significant milestone in our collective efforts to reduce nicotine related harm. We are proud of our Joint Health Improvement Team who have developed this new resource with several key stakeholders, including Scottish Borders Council, Trading Standards and YouthBorders.

“Most notably, the contributions of young people have been crucial in shaping this resource which will help us address the challenges of nicotine use in a collaborative and impactful way. This toolkit and supported lesson plans will be rolled out across Scottish Borders Primary and Secondary Schools and promoted in youth and community settings.”

Public Health Minister Jenni Minto added: “This is a significant first for the Borders and Scotland and can help prevent the next generation from becoming hooked on nicotine.

“The Tobacco and Vapes Bill will build on progress like this by ensuring children born after 1 January 2009 can never legally buy tobacco. I am determined to ensure a tobacco-free Scotland, where people live longer and healthier lives, by 2034.

“This landmark legislation will also ban vapes and nicotine products from being deliberately promoted and advertised to children to protect young people from harm.”
