What are Gross Motor Skills?

Gross Motor skills refer to the skills which requires whole body movement and which involve the large muscles of the body. 

 

Examples of Gross Motor Skills Include: 

  • Walking

  • Running

  • Throwing & Catching balls

  • Climbing

  • Jumping

  • Crawling 

 

Why are these important?

Moving around – children are required to walk and run to get where they need to be

Play – Playground skills such as playing on a climbing frame, using a swing and playing with a skipping rope require gross motor skills

Sporting skills – Throwing and catching a ball, playing football and other games

Daily Activities – there are various daily activities that require gross motor skills, including getting out of bed and getting dressed (e.g standing on one leg to put trousers on)
