Who We Are

Our team includes Clinical Psychologists, Clinical Associates in Applied Psychology, Trainee Psychologists, and Assistant Psychologists.

You may meet one or more of our team members during your assessment and psychological therapy journey.

Most of us are integrated into the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), working alongside other professionals such as nurses and psychiatrists. We are not a standalone psychology service, but an integrated part of CAMHS.

In addition, two of us work part-time as a Paediatric Psychology service, which is aimed at the psychological intervention needs of children and young people derived from their physical health conditions. We work alongside the medical care professionals and offer consultation, training and provide direct psychological therapies.

What We Offer

We support children and young people aged 5 to 18, and often their parents or carers, with a range of mental health needs. Our work includes:

  • Specialist psychological assessments, including for learning and intellectual disabilities
  • Evidence-based psychological therapies for moderate to severe mental health conditions
  • General assessments for neurodevelopmental conditions and mental health concerns
  • Group programmes and professional consultations
  • Coaching for health and education staff to help them use psychological approaches with children and young people experiencing mild to moderate difficulties
  • Paediatric Psychology also offer availability during medical speciality review clinics

 How We Work With You

We try to tailor our approach depending on individual needs.

Sometimes we work directly with children and young people, sometimes with parents or carers, and often with both.

In addition, we will engage with professional networks or other services where that is also appropriate and in the best interests of the child or young person (child protection, care experienced young people, vulnerable young people).

Most of our appointments are face-to-face, but we can offer video-based sessions if that suits you better.

What You Can Expect

We’ll always talk with you about:

  • What we can offer
  • Why we’re doing a particular piece of work
  • What goals we’ll work on together
  • What choices you have in your care

We usually work with people for a few months. As a goal-focused service, we are not designed to offer long-term support. Once our work together is complete, your psychologist will move on to support another young person in need.

Where We See People

We offer appointments in:

  • Clinics (e.g. Andrew Lang Unit and Borders General Hospital)
  • GP and health buildings across the Scottish Borders
  • Schools, for certain types of assessment
