Please note: There is no national NHS Pharmacy First Scotland PGD supporting the use of chloramphenicol eye drops in children under the age of 2 years under the NHS Pharmacy First Scotland service.

As detailed in the Lothian Joint Formulary (LJF) https://formulary.nhs.scot/east/eye/eye-conditions/bacterial-conjunctivitis/self-care is the recommended first line treatment for bacterial conjunctivitis. Most cases are self-limiting and resolve within 5-7 days. For children under the age of 2 years who require treatment you should refer on to their GP. The LJF details Pharmacy First recommendations for infected eye and child bacterial conjunctivitis (including local guidance on antimicrobial eye preparations available on prescription for children < 2 years)
