Protocol for Males presenting with Acute Retention of Urine

Dipstix Testing - Do NOT use Dipstix as the basis of diagnosing UTI.

Catheter Specimens of Urine (CSU)

Urine samples must be obtained from a sampling port using aseptic technique.

Where a catheter valve is fitted the valve must be changed prior to obtaining a CSU and taken via clean valve.

For complex patients with repeated or high risk of infection, please discuss treatment options with the Microbiologist or Urology Specialist Nurse.
