16 January 2023
Today, Monday 16 January, is ‘Brew Monday’: a campaign started by Samaritans to encourage people to reach out to loved ones, friends and colleagues to have a chat over a cup of tea.
A combination of post-Christmas blues, cold and dark weather and cutting back on spending may be some of the reasons why January can feel like a long and difficult month. However, by bringing awareness to the mental wellbeing of those around us, as well as ourselves, we can make January feel more manageable.
Fiona Doig, Head of Health Improvement at NHS Borders said: “Checking in with the people around you is important all year round, but this date is a good reminder for everyone to take some time to look after their mental health and wellbeing, and that of those around them.
“There are lots of other ways to keep yourself well such as doing things you enjoy, learning something new, or being more active. Our Six Ways to be Well in the Scottish Borders wellbeing guide has more useful ideas, information and local contacts.
“It’s also important to know that help and support is available should you need it. If you, or someone you know, are feeling down or that you don’t know how to cope, you could speak to family, friends, or a confidential advice service such as Breathing Space (0800 838587) or Samaritans (116 123).”
