Students and school leavers under the age of 25 are being urged to take up the Meningococcal B (MenB) vaccine.
This time-limited vaccination programme is to protect those most at risk and comes ahead of the new academic year, when many young people will be preparing to start university or college. Increased social mixing and shared student accommodation mean that young people often have a higher risk of infection from MenB.
Meningococcal B bacteria can cause meningitis and sepsis - serious conditions that can develop quickly and, in some cases, be life-threatening or lead to long-term health complications such as amputations, hearing loss and brain damage. It is even fatal in around 10% of cases.
The vaccination programme starts this month, and two doses, given four weeks apart, are essential for full protection.
You can get the MenB vaccine if you:
- were born between 1 March 2008 – 28 February 2009
- were in S6 in 2025/2026
- are under 25 and starting first year at university in 2026/2027
- are under 25, starting first year at college and living in shared accommodation
If you were born between 1 March 2008 and 28 February 2009 you should have received a letter with details on how to book your appointment.
Please note that letters are only being sent to this group. If you are eligible through one of the other groups listed above, please contact our vaccination service directly via 01896 809250 to arrange your appointment.
We are also running a drop-in vaccination clinic on Wednesday 15 July between 3:00pm – 5:00pm at the Galashiels Volunteer Hall. No appointment is needed for this drop-in clinic; however, there may be a short wait at busy times before you are seen for your vaccination.
Dr Rebecca Devine, NHS Borders Public Health Consultant said: “Ahead of the new academic year, we are urging all eligible young people across the Borders to take up our offer of MenB vaccinations.
“Starting university or college is one of the highest-risk periods for this serious disease, as the bacteria is spread through close contact such as living in the same household.
“The MenB vaccine has a strong safety record and the evidence is clear that it works. So, if you are eligible, please call our vaccination booking hub today to arrange your appointments. This will help keep you and others safe to enjoy this exciting new chapter in your life.”
