About our service:

The aim of the Work & Well-Being Service (W&WB) team is to lead and support improvement in the health of the working age population of the Scottish Borders. Getting people into work, keeping them there and keeping them healthy is of vital importance to reducing health inequalities.

Activity supporting this agenda is underpinned by the unified approach taken to workplace health within NHS Borders with a co-ordinated, co-located team established in 2009 under a single management structure. This allows a ‘one-stop shop’ approach to be taken to service delivery with satellite clinics and on-site visits undertaken based on client need. Key services contributing to health in the workplace include:

Occupational Health Services (OHS)

The service aim is to ensure that people are in work that is compatible with their health status and that work doesn’t adversely impact on health. Acknowledging the fact that many individuals spend a large part of their adult life in the workplace, the service helps to support the overall objectives of any organisation by focusing on improving the health of staff in their work environment.

As Specialist Public Health Practitioners, the OH team support the provision of safe and healthy working conditions by offering individual assessment and corporate services. Services are provided to NHS staff and on an income generation basis to non - NHS organisations.

Working Health Services (WHS)

This Scottish Government funded project has now been running for 3 years and links directly to NHS Borders actions from the Adult Rehabilitation Framework  and Health Works. Providing vocational rehabilitation and occupational health advice, the service is designed to help employees of Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) employing less than 250 people, stay at work or return to work sooner if they have health issues.

Healthy Working Lives (HWL)

As part of a national initiative, the Healthy Working Lives team provide a range of occupational health and safety related advisory services for all businesses in the Scottish Borders the majority of which are SMEs. These services include health and safety advice, health promotion advice, help with policy development, training, awareness raising, and a 3 tier award scheme.
