Staff in the Maternity Ward at the Borders General Hospital (BGH) were presented with a brand new set of portable scales for weighing newborn babies. These scales were a result of local fundraising by the Breast feeding in the Borders peer support volunteers who held bake sales at the BGH and organised a sponsored toddle raising a total of £274 to buy these specialist scales for the ward.

One of the great benefits of these scales is that they can be taken to the bedside of new mothers by midwives to weigh babies on the ward. This allows mother and baby to be together at all times during the first few days of babies lives, which wasn’t previously possible with fixed scales.

Nicky Gammie, Senior Midwife at NHS Borders said: “We are delighted with this generous gift, the scales are now in daily use and are making a huge difference to new mothers.”

“We are grateful to have breastfeeding peer support volunteers who support mums and midwives in the Borders.  They have gone the extra mile by fundraising for these scales, and the Maternity Ward would like to say a big thank you.”
