All Borders residents aged 65 and over are currently being invited to come forward for their pneumococcal vaccine.

If you are eligible you will receive a letter by early next week with details advising how to book your appointment. Please do not contact your GP practice to book your vaccination appointments as they will not be able to book them for you.

When attending your appointment please wear a face covering and remember to bring your appointment letter and a list of any current medications that you are taking.

Nicola Macdonald, Clinical Service Manager - Vaccination said: “Pneumococcal infection can cause serious illnesses, such as pneumonia and meningitis. It can affect anyone, but if you’re aged 65 or over or have certain long-term health conditions you are at higher risk of pneumococcal disease.

“Getting the pneumococcal vaccine is the best way to help protect yourself against infections caused by the most common types of pneumococcal bacteria. You can find out more about pneumococcal infection and the benefits of vaccination on the NHS Inform website.

“Most people aged 65 and over will only need a single dose, which will help protect them for life.”
