Self Referral

If you are 16 years old or over and live in Scotland you do not need to see your GP first to receive physiotherapy advice and/or assessment.

Self referral to musculoskeletal physiotherapy service

You can now contact a telephone triage service for standard musculoskeletal conditions, such as back pain, muscle or joint problems. Please note we no longer accept paper self referral forms for musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

Please telephone NHS 24 Musculoskeletal Assessment and Triage Service (MATS) on 0800 917 9390. Your call will be received by fully trained call operators, supported by clinicians who can offer advice to help manage your condition.

If required, they will forward an electronic referral to NHS Borders musculoskeletal physiotherapy service who will allocate an appointment.

Waiting times do vary dependent on the level of demand for this service. Whilst we try to offer an appointment as close as possible to your nearest physiotherapy department you may be offered an appointment at another location. This will help you receive the earliest available appointment that is most appropriate for your condition and helps us greatly to manage waiting times for this service.

Please read the Information Leaflet for more detail or pick up a card from your GP reception or local physiotherapy department.

Self referral to neurology or obstetrics physiotherapy services

We continue to accept self referral forms to physiotherapy for neurological or obstetric related conditions. Please download the relevant referral form listed at the bottom of this page and hand in at your GP reception or nearest physiotherapy department. The physiotherapy department will be in touch when they have an appointment for you.

Children's physiotherapy services

Self referral is not yet available for children's physiotherapy services. Please contact your GP / Health Visitor for a referral. Further information on our service can be found via the following link.
