There are a number of services that provide testing for HIV and other blood borne viruses in Borders (including hep B and hep C).

GP/Primary Care Services
If you think you have been at risk ask your GP or Practice Nurse about testing for HIV and other blood borne viruses. Visit the NHS Borders website for information on GP services.

In addition to primary care services, specialist harm reduction services exist to reduce and avoid the transmission and onward spread of blood-borne viruses by providing credible information and testing on all blood borne viruses and by providing people who inject drugs with easy access to and disposal of sterile injecting equipment. These services are:

Borders Addiction Service (BAS)
NHS Borders Addiction Service are a specialist addiction treatment service, providing accessible, confidential, person–centred quality interventions. They work in partnership with other services to support the individual on their journey of recovery.

This is a service for individuals over the age of 16 yrs who are concerned about their alcohol and/or drug use and for adults over 16 such as family members who are affected by someone else’s alcohol and/or drug use

Injecting Equipment Service (IEP)
There are eight IEP services in the Borders where you can exchange your used injecting equipment for new equipment. No appointment is necessary.

Sexual Health Services
Borders sexual health services also provide harm reduction information and testing for HIV and hepatitis. Testing and treatment is also offered for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It is an NHS service providing FREE sexual health care in the Scottish Borders, including contraception, free condom supplies, pregnancy tests and emergency contraception.

There is only one treatment service for Hep B and C in Borders and this is based at the Borders General Hospital in near Melrose. Referral is via your GP, Sexual Health clinic, Borders Addiction Service or Addaction.
