Time, Space, Compassion

What is Time, Space, Compassion?

Time Space Compassion is an approach which can be implemented within all sectors and across our communities. Time, Space, Compassion started life as a report published by the Scottish Government in 2021 which provided recommendations for improvements in suicidal crisis response. The report was just the starting point and from there, resources and materials have been developed by the Time Space Compassion Implementation Team to support practitioners to reflect on the principles of Time Space Compassion within their practice.

This short video provides an overview of Times Space Compassion: Introducing the Time Space Compassion approach to Suicide Prevention

The Introductory Guide to Time Space Compassion outlines shared principles, practices and underpinning values to help people offer a response rooted in human connection and compassion.

Additional resources have been created to help us further understand Time Space Compassion in practice.

Introducing Time Space Compassion is a short animation which introduces the principles within the context of the Distress Brief Intervention (DBI) service.

The Scottish Personality Disorder Network produced an animation for those interested in exploring Time Space Compassion from the perspective of someone who has been given a diagnosis of personality disorder: Seeing human beings and promoting better interactions

A collection of practice stories were created to help illustrate the principles and support practices of Time Space Compassion: Stories in Practice.

A new limited edition Time Space Compassion podcast series has been developed with inputs from people with lived experience, expertise and a range of practice perspectives. Each episode focuses on a different theme:

  • Episode 01 - Trauma
  • Episode 02 - Language, trust and behaviours
  • Episode 03 - Lived experience, peer support and co-production

Episodes are available on Suicide Prevention Scotland’s new Podbean channel, https:// suicidepreventionscotland.podbean.com

Where to start

If you’re not sure where to start, here are three ways we can all start to take action to support Time Space Compassion.

1) Talk about it

  • Name it – when you see it; let others know you value what they do
  • Reference it – in strategy, plans and commissions
  • Integrate it – in supervision, peer support or any other place you reflect and take stock

2) Explore it

  • Existing data – explore what you already know and the insights you gain from looking at it through the Time Space Compassion lens
  • Ask people – where they see and experience it, and what you can learn from that
  • Relationships – check in with other support providers, particularly those you regularly refer to and receive referrals from

3) Plan time to reflect and top up learning

  • Tap into, revisit and share – starting with the learning and resources referenced in the Introductory Guide
  • Reflect – on where you’re already strong and possibilities for action, using the prompts throughout the Introductory Guide
