General Practitioner (GP) & GP Out of Hours Service

If you have an illness or injury that won't go away and that isn't an emergency, contact your GP to make an appointment. Your GP can deal with all chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and asthma. Your GP knows your medical history and can arrange the most appropriate investigations and access to specialist health professionals if required.

When your GP surgery is closed and you're too ill to wait, you can access medical care by calling NHS 24 on the free phone number 111.

Everyone needs to register at their local GP surgery, to find find your nearest medical practice, visit our local service directory.

GP appointments are in high demand and practices are limited to the number of people who they can see so please use GP services responsibly and think before you phone. Please save appointments for those who really need them.

If you do need to see a GP please call your practice. A member of staff will ask you about your condition so that they can direct you to the most appropriate healthcare professional to ensure that you get the right care and advice. This could include self-care, community pharmacist, dentist or optometrist.

You might be offered a telephone or video appointment with a GP. If you're asked to go to your practice for an appointment, you might notice staff wearing personal protective equipment like face masks. You might also be asked to follow additional hygiene measures.
